I am running for the State Senate for the 16th District, which covers Warren, Van Buren, Grundy, Marion, Franklin, Sequatchie, and Coffee Counties, under the Democratic ticket.
Early Life & Family:
My parents were Jack and Maureen (Hooper) Florida and I was born in Flint, Michigan. By the time I was 8 years old, both of my parents had passed away and I was sent to live with an aunt and uncle, Milas and H.D. (David) Hibdon, in McMinnville, Tennessee. They took good care of me and encouraged me to serve God, be honest in all my dealings, and treat everyone with respect.
I have been blessed with two wonderful sons, Jahir Hernandez and Zachary Younglove, a beautiful daughter-in-law, Rachel Hernandez, and a precious grandson, Jackson Hernandez. I am also an animal lover and enjoy spending time with my dogs: Daisy, Dandy, and Jax.
Education and Career:
In 1980, during my senior year at Warren County High School, I began working in a local law firm as a secretary. That job led to a long career as a paralegal in a field I loved. When my children were in high school, I decided it was finally my opportunity to pursue my dream of attending college and law school.
I graduated college from MTSU, summa cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology: Social Movement and Social Change, and double minors in Psychology and Political Science. I never imagined a future in politics. I went to law school at the Nashville School of Law, where I graduated in the top third of my class, and opened my law practice in October, 2017.
I practiced solo until September, 2019, when I joined the firm of Griffin & Davis, PLLC, in Sparta, now Griffin Law Group, PLLC. I focus in all areas of family law, as well as general civil litigation, estate planning, and probate, and I practice throughout Middle Tennessee.
I like to stay active and hold certifications as an instructor in Tantra Yoga and Barre fitness. I find these help my mind, body, and spirit. I also frequently present workshops on yoga and proper breathing for stress reduction.
I am a member of First United Methodist Church in downtown McMinnville, where I sing in the alto section of the choir. My church family is a valuable part of my life and I enjoy our community.
Community & Professional Affiliations:
I am a member of the McMinnville Bar Association, the DeKalb County Bar Association, and the Tennessee Bar Association. I am also a member of The Power of 100 Warren County. In this group, local women contribute $100 each quarter and together, we have given thousands of dollars to local non-profit groups such as Families in Crisis, McMinnville Special Games, Meals on Wheels and Helping Hands Ministry.
